Best Spark Plugs for Common Small Engines

Updated 2026-05-20

A fitment-first guide to common small-engine spark plugs, including two-stroke trimmer and chainsaw plugs plus four-stroke mower plugs.

Verify before ordering: Fitment can vary by serial number, production date, region, and sub-model. Match the OEM number and physical dimensions before ordering.

Start With Engine Type

Most two-stroke handheld equipment uses compact plugs such as NGK BPMR7A or Champion RCJ6Y, while many four-stroke mower engines use longer-reach plugs such as Champion RC12YC.

Do not choose a plug only by brand. Match thread reach, seat style, resistor type, terminal style, heat range, and gap.

Use the Model Page as the Tie-Breaker

Open the equipment model page before buying so the plug is checked against the specific engine or saw family.

If a plug cross-reference looks right but the old plug has a different reach or terminal, stop and verify whether the equipment has a different engine installed.

When to Replace

Replace a plug when the electrode is worn, the ceramic is cracked, the engine is hard to start, or annual service is due.

Oil fouling, heavy carbon, or raw-fuel smell can point to a richer fuel or mechanical issue; a new plug may only hide the symptom briefly.
